Primary Trucker Liability

Required for all carriers with an MC number. Covers bodily injury and property damage you may cause to others in an accident.

This will usually make up the biggest chunk of your insurance premium.

Motor Truck Cargo

Not required by FMCSA, but commonly required by shippers and freight brokers.
This policy protects the goods you haul in case of damage or loss due to fire, collision, theft, or reefer failure. Shippers require this coverage to ensure their products are financially protected while in transit.

Trailer Interchange / Non-Owned Trailer Insurance

Not FMCSA-required, but often required by carriers or brokers.
It provides physical damage coverage for trailers you’re pulling but don’t own—typically under a trailer interchange agreement. Without it, you’re personally liable for any damage to those trailers.

Non-Trucking Liability (NTL)

Not required by FMCSA, but often required by motor carriers for leased drivers.
This covers liability when your truck is used off-dispatch, like for personal errands. It ensures coverage when you're not under load but still behind the wheel.

Motor Truck Cargo

Required by law in most states if you have employees.
It covers medical bills and wage replacement for drivers or staff injured on the job. Even if you’re a solo operator, brokers may ask for proof of worker coverage, or you might opt for occupational accident insurance.

Physical Damage Insurance

Optional if you own your equipment. But usually required by lenders or leasing companies.
It covers repair or replacement costs if your truck or trailer is damaged due to collision, theft, fire, or vandalism. It’s essential if you're financing your equipment and want to protect your investment.

General Liability Insurance

Not required by FMCSA, but may be required by brokers, warehouses, or loading facilities.
It covers third-party claims unrelated to driving, like slip-and-fall injuries, property damage at docks, or advertising-related liability. Large logistics contracts often require it for added protection.

Downtime & Rental Reimbursement

It reimburses income loss and rental expenses if your truck is down due to a covered incident. This keeps cash flow stable while you're waiting on repairs.

Roadside Assistance

Breaking down with 80,000 lbs on the road can be costly. This may cover towing, fuel delivery, tire service, lockout assistance, and more. It’s often bundled with other coverages to reduce costly delays and breakdown-related disruptions.

Umbrella Liability Insurance

Optional but highly recommended. Extends your liability limits beyond what’s covered in auto and general liability policies—helpful for contracts with higher liability thresholds.

Real Trucking Insurance Claims

1.Cargo Spill on State Route 18

In October 2024, a refrigerated semi-truck collided with a ramp wall on Washington's busy State Route 18, spilling frozen poultry and diesel fuel over the roadway. Clean-up crews worked for hours to clear slippery debris and contaminated runoff—highlighting the broad operational risks even on non‑interstate routes.

Claims for cargo loss, hazmat cleanup, environmental remediation, and extra towing fees followed. Policies with motor truck cargo, auto liability, and pollution liability came into play. At DOK, we guided our client through complex negotiations and ensured swift payout, maintaining route uptime and avoiding penalties. (Source: KOMO News) (injurylawgroupnw.com)

2.Improper Maintenance Leads to Lawsuit

A 2019 multi‑vehicle crash on I‑70 in Colorado was determined to be caused by brake failure on a semi-truck. Four people were killed and multiple others injured when the truck barreled downhill with no braking ability; investigators later found overdue maintenance records that were never addressed. (Wikipedia)

The insurer faced wrongful-death and bodily injury claims exceeding policy limits. DOK worked closely with safety specialists to help our client develop a preventative maintenance plan and audits to avoid repeating mistakes. Armed with solid documentation, we also helped defend against allegations of systemic negligence.

3.Unauthorized Driver Results in Denial

In one case, a part‑time weekend helper drove a truck during off‑hours and was involved in a rear‑end collision. Though liability and costs were clearly our client’s, the insurer denied the claim—because the driver wasn’t listed. (Law Office of John Solis)

DOK intervened by correcting driver rosters mid‑policy and adding proper endorsements. We also financed a class and ongoing review protocol for operators to prevent future denials due to clerical oversight.

4.Stolen Load Triggers Cargo Coverage

A southern hauler lost a load of high‑value electronics at a rest stop when its trailer was broken into overnight. The theft triggered the motor truck cargo endorsement, and the insurer coordinated replacement freight and partial reimbursement quickly after police filed a report.

DOK assisted by gathering police reports, invoices, and customer communications fast. This ensured expedited claim settlement and supported the hauler’s reliability rating with future brokers.

5.Hazmat Spill Shuts Down Highway

In July 2025, a tanker truck carrying fuel overturned on U.S.â€Ŋ101 in Washington’s Olympic Peninsula. Approximately 3,000 gallons of diesel and gasoline leaked into restored tribal waters, forcing evacuation of residents and prolonged lane closures. (AP News)

The carrier’s pollution liability policy funded emergency response, site remediation, and ecological restoration. DOK helped the insured secure coverage and navigate state and tribal communication protocols, minimizing legal and environmental repercussions.
