Insurance For High-Risk Truckers
Getting non-renewed? Lapsed coverage? Ineligible for coverage?
Who We Serve
At DOK Insurance Agency, we specialize in protecting high-risk commercial trucking operations. Whether you’re hauling freight across state lines, running heavy equipment on construction sites, or managing specialized fleets, we create coverage strategies designed to match your elevated risk profile while keeping you compliant with DOT, FMCSA, and state regulations.
From long-haul trucks and hotshot rigs to hazmat carriers, cement mixers, and last-mile delivery vans, our policies are tailored to address the challenges that put your operation in the high-risk category.
Why Some Trucking Companies Are Considered High-Risk
Your business may be classified as high-risk if it involves any of the following factors:
- High CSA Scores or Safety Violations – frequent roadside inspections, violations, or out-of-service orders.
- Unlisted Drivers – If an unlisted driver gets into an accident, chances are you are getting non-renewed.
- Hazardous Cargo – hauling hazmat materials, chemicals, or oversized loads.
- New Venture Operations – startups with limited driving history or new DOT authority.
- High Claim Frequency – previous accidents, claims, or insurance cancellations.
- Non-Standard Equipment – heavy-duty, modified, or specialized trucks.
- Driver Turnover or Inexperience – high driver turnover, younger drivers, or limited experience.
- Long-Haul & Cross-Border Routes – extensive miles, night driving, or international routes.
- Tight Delivery Schedules – operations under pressure, increasing risk exposure.
We work with carriers who understand these challenges, ensuring you have access to coverage even when others decline.

Primary Trucker Liability
Required for all carriers with an MC number. Covers bodily injury and property damage you may cause to others in an accident.
This will usually make up the biggest chunk of your insurance premium.
Motor Truck Cargo
Not required by FMCSA, but commonly required by shippers and freight brokers.
This policy protects the goods you haul in case of damage or loss due to fire, collision, theft, or reefer failure. Shippers require this coverage to ensure their products are financially protected while in transit.
Trailer Interchange / Non-Owned Trailer Insurance
Not FMCSA-required, but often required by carriers or brokers.
It provides physical damage coverage for trailers you’re pulling but don’t own—typically under a trailer interchange agreement. Without it, you’re personally liable for any damage to those trailers.
Non-Trucking Liability (NTL)
Not required by FMCSA, but often required by motor carriers for leased drivers.
This covers liability when your truck is used off-dispatch, like for personal errands. It ensures coverage when you're not under load but still behind the wheel.
Motor Truck Cargo
Required by law in most states if you have employees.
It covers medical bills and wage replacement for drivers or staff injured on the job. Even if you’re a solo operator, brokers may ask for proof of worker coverage, or you might opt for occupational accident insurance.
Physical Damage Insurance
Optional if you own your equipment. But usually required by lenders or leasing companies.
It covers repair or replacement costs if your truck or trailer is damaged due to collision, theft, fire, or vandalism. It’s essential if you're financing your equipment and want to protect your investment.
General Liability Insurance
Not required by FMCSA, but may be required by brokers, warehouses, or loading facilities.
It covers third-party claims unrelated to driving, like slip-and-fall injuries, property damage at docks, or advertising-related liability. Large logistics contracts often require it for added protection.
Downtime & Rental Reimbursement
It reimburses income loss and rental expenses if your truck is down due to a covered incident. This keeps cash flow stable while you're waiting on repairs.
Roadside Assistance
Breaking down with 80,000 lbs on the road can be costly. This may cover towing, fuel delivery, tire service, lockout assistance, and more. It’s often bundled with other coverages to reduce costly delays and breakdown-related disruptions.
Umbrella Liability Insurance
Optional but highly recommended. Extends your liability limits beyond what’s covered in auto and general liability policies—helpful for contracts with higher liability thresholds.

High-Risk Trucking Insurance FAQs
1.Why is my trucking company considered high-risk?
Insurance carriers classify operations as high-risk for reasons like high CSA scores, frequent claims, hazardous cargo, new venture status, or driver turnover. We work with markets that still offer coverage even when others won’t.
2.My premiums skyrocketed—can you help lower them?
Yes. We can restructure your policy, implement safety credits, and place you with specialty carriers who understand high-risk trucking. Many clients see significant savings despite recent hikes.
3.What can I do if my current insurer is non-renewing me?
We specialize in finding replacement coverage for non-renewed trucking companies. Our team shops multiple high-risk markets to avoid gaps in your liability and keep you operating legally.
4.Do violations and claims stay on my record forever?
No. Most violations and losses impact your insurance for 3–5 years. During that time, we can help mitigate the impact by structuring your coverage and advising on risk reduction protocols.
5.Can you cover my drivers and equipment if they’re non-standard?
Yes. We work with carriers that accept operations with younger drivers, modified equipment, or unique hauling exposures—areas many standard insurers decline.
6.Do you work with new trucking ventures?
Yes. Many insurers refuse new ventures, but we partner with carriers who welcome startups. We help structure your first-year policy to get you moving while building credibility.
7.Can I improve my risk profile to qualify for better rates?
Absolutely. Implement dash cams, driver training, telematics, and proactive safety measures. We provide guidance on building a stronger profile to earn discounts over time.
8.What if I haul hazmat or other high-liability cargo?
Hazmat hauling is often considered high-risk, but we have access to specialty markets that specifically insure hazardous materials transport while meeting strict federal requirements.
9.How fast can you replace coverage if I get canceled?
In most cases, we can secure same-day quotes from high-risk carriers and bind coverage within 24–48 hours to avoid costly downtime and out-of-service penalties.
10.Can you help with filings and compliance if I switch carriers?
Yes. We handle all FMCSA filings (BMC-91, BOC-3) and provide certificates of insurance quickly to brokers, shippers, and factoring companies to keep you on the road.
