Trucking Insurance Coverages Every Owner-Operator Should Know

Primary Trucker Liability

Required for all carriers with an MC number. Covers bodily injury and property damage you may cause to others in an accident.

This will usually make up the biggest chunk of your insurance premium.

Motor Truck Cargo

Not required by FMCSA, but commonly required by shippers and freight brokers.
This policy protects the goods you haul in case of damage or loss due to fire, collision, theft, or reefer failure. Shippers require this coverage to ensure their products are financially protected while in transit.

Trailer Interchange / Non-Owned Trailer Insurance

Not FMCSA-required, but often required by carriers or brokers.
It provides physical damage coverage for trailers you’re pulling but don’t own—typically under a trailer interchange agreement. Without it, you’re personally liable for any damage to those trailers.

Non-Trucking Liability (NTL)

Not required by FMCSA, but often required by motor carriers for leased drivers.
This covers liability when your truck is used off-dispatch, like for personal errands. It ensures coverage when you're not under load but still behind the wheel.

Motor Truck Cargo

Required by law in most states if you have employees.
It covers medical bills and wage replacement for drivers or staff injured on the job. Even if you’re a solo operator, brokers may ask for proof of worker coverage, or you might opt for occupational accident insurance.

Physical Damage Insurance

Optional if you own your equipment. But usually required by lenders or leasing companies.
It covers repair or replacement costs if your truck or trailer is damaged due to collision, theft, fire, or vandalism. It’s essential if you're financing your equipment and want to protect your investment.

General Liability Insurance

Not required by FMCSA, but may be required by brokers, warehouses, or loading facilities.
It covers third-party claims unrelated to driving, like slip-and-fall injuries, property damage at docks, or advertising-related liability. Large logistics contracts often require it for added protection.

Downtime & Rental Reimbursement

It reimburses income loss and rental expenses if your truck is down due to a covered incident. This keeps cash flow stable while you're waiting on repairs.

Roadside Assistance

Breaking down with 80,000 lbs on the road can be costly. This may cover towing, fuel delivery, tire service, lockout assistance, and more. It’s often bundled with other coverages to reduce costly delays and breakdown-related disruptions.

Umbrella Liability Insurance

Optional but highly recommended. Extends your liability limits beyond what’s covered in auto and general liability policies—helpful for contracts with higher liability thresholds.

Owner-Operator with Authority FAQs

1.Can I grow my authority without switching policies?

Yes. If you're adding power units or expanding operations, we can adjust your policy without canceling and rewriting. We work with insurers that understand scaling fleets.

2.Do shippers care about how long I’ve had my authority?

Absolutely. Some high-value freight brokers require at least 6-12 months of active authority. We'll help structure your coverage to meet these thresholds and boost your credibility.

3.What can I do to keep claims from hurting my renewal?

Implement ELD-integrated dash cams, track driver performance, and file accident reports quickly. We offer support on setting up risk reduction protocols to keep your loss ratio clean.

4.How can I take advantage of multi-policy discounts?

Bundling auto liability, cargo, physical damage, and general liability can save money and streamline billing. We’ll shop carriers offering packaged commercial auto programs that scale with your business.

5.Can I insure trailers I don’t own?

Yes. We can add non-owned trailer coverage or trailer interchange to your policy. If you use drop-and-hook or rented trailers regularly, this is essential to avoid gaps in liability and damage protection.

6.Can I lease on other drivers under my authority?

Yes, but your insurance must be expanded to cover their vehicles and operations. FMCSA lease agreements and proper documentation are required. We can walk you through setting it up safely and legally.

7.How do I file proof of insurance with the FMCSA?

We file the BMC-91 electronically once your policy is bound. This triggers MC activation. We also handle BOC-3 filings and send COIs directly to brokers or shippers on request.

8.Is intrastate insurance different from interstate?

Yes. FMCSA governs interstate policies, but intrastate carriers must meet state-specific limits and filings. We handle both, ensuring you're compliant wherever you operate.

9.What if I need help with compliance?

DOK offers support with ELD rules, new entrant audits, UCR, IFTA, and more. We help clients stay legal, avoid fines, and pass DOT audits. You’re not alone in navigating regulations.

10.Can I generate Certificates of Insurance myself?

Yes. Our 24/7 client portal lets you issue COIs instantly to brokers, factoring companies, and shippers—no need to wait for office hours. This keeps your business moving.
